2008 CHARITY PARTNER - LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION

LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION AND THE ALICE SPRINGS TURF CLUB
MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER

The Alice Springs Turf Club is thrilled to announce the Leukaemia Foundation as the charity partner for the 2008 Cup Carnival.

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Territorians living with blood cancers and related disorders

It is estimated that nearly 100 Territorians were diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders in 2007.

For those requiring treatment, they have no choice but to uproot their lives and relocate, more often to Adelaide. For some, this happens overnight and it means leaving work, school, family commitments and friends while dealing with the emotional turmoil of diagnosis and immediate treatment.

In addition, the average length of time of treatment for blood cancers is eight months; much longer than other cancers. This often means the impact on people’s financial situation, education and employment is significant and long-term.

How the Leukaemia Foundation helps

The Leukaemia Foundation supports Territorians living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders by providing a range of services at no cost to patients or their families:

  • a free ‘home-away-from-home’ near their hospital for the duration of their treatment;
  • transport to take them to hospital appointments;
  • once-off financial assistance to cover specific expenses; and
  • practical assistance, personalised care and emotional support.

Importantly, the Leukaemia Foundation also funds lifesaving research into better treatments. Research continues to improve the quality of care for all Australians living with a blood cancer but the search for a cure continues.

How the 2008 Cup Carnival will help the Leukaemia Foundation

The Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the generosity of the community and the private sector to deliver our Mission to Care and Vision to Cure.

In choosing to support the Leukaemia Foundation, we are helping to make a difference, and taking part in the following activities during the 2008 Cup Carnival will greatly assist the Foundation reach their goals:
