2007 SALE HIGHLIGHTS
THE tremendous source of winners in the Territory – the Red Centre Yearling Sale – will this year have its 27th renewal, and the concept developed back in the early 1990’s continues to go from strength to strength.
As has become the norm, the Red Centre graduates continued on their winning way in the past 12 months – there has now been over 760 wins and stakes in excess of $6.7m since the sale was first held in 1991.
Of course, the headliner from a sale perspective in recent times has been Periduki, who cost connections just $6,000 and has to date won just short of $80,000 in stakes from his eight career runs.
He was unbeatable in the Territory, carrying all before him culminating in a tremendous win in the 2007 running of the William Inglis and Son Red Centre Classic before scoring his sixth successive victory in Saturday company in South Australia.
Other winners from the 2006 sale have been Imsoroyal and Royal Bond, who both won as two-year-olds, while Rafaldnbort impressed when winning twice as an early three-year-old from just two outings.
Another notable sale performer in the last 12 months has been Not Abandoned (2002 sale graduate), who took his record to 12 wins and 24 minor placings. His stakes, now $216,455, place him second behind Doright ($239,780) in the all-time Red Centre Stable of Stars.
Greimota and Crowne Pilot, from the 2003 sale, both won races during the last 12 months while The Tailer and Potaski, from the small offering (12) in 2004, were also good winners.
Four from the 2005 sale –The Escapee, Dangerous Terrain, Uncle Jack and The Soldier – have done their connections proud in the past year, all bagging victories. The Soldier was the best of them, winning five times in 2007, while Dangerous Terrain (3) and The Escapee (2) were multiple winners.
To date, the 2007 sale graduates have only had the one opportunity to show their wares, but Hightou, the son of High Rolling and Toujours Dansant who topped the sale at $15,000 (a Red Centre Yearling Sale record), created a good impression when accounting for Midday Rhumba and Hezajollygoodfella, also Red Centre horses, on November 24.
The 2007 sale was a great success, with 17 lots selling for a total of $119,250, an average price of $7,015. As well as the record-priced lot, which fell to the bid of top trainer Nev Connor, the sale average was the fourth-best ever, and interest was very strong in an excellent catalogue of young horses.
Red Centre Yearling Sale graduates are eligible for $4,000 TROBIS bonuses which are applied to all two and three-year-old races run at Alice Springs, and the rewards, particularly for the two-year-olds sold through the sale, are generous indeed.
For example, the first prizemoney of $10,350 for the $15,000 William Inglis Red Centre Classic on XXXX Gold Alice Springs Cup Day can theoretically swell to somewhere in the vicinity of $80,000-$90,000 should the winner be dominant throughout the season.
This includes the winner’s cheque plus numerous TROBIS bonuses, a $12,000 Red Centre Yearling Sale Bonus and a $30,000 Triple Crown Bonus.
The Alice Springs Turf Club is fortunate indeed to have the backing of William Inglis and Son for the sale. The Inglis team have been great supporters since joining the fray in 1996, and as well as purchasing the yearlings, they will also be on hand in Alice to sell, assist and give guidance to anyone who needs it regarding the sale.
